it’s a zoo out there

One snowy night in NYC, I trekked out to the lower east side with the family in search of comfort food.  We landed at the Meatball Shop on Stanton which is now officially one of our faves.  With coats, scarves, hats, and gloves everywhere, we huddled around the communal table awaiting our delicious food.  Just as I was about to tuck into my bolognese meatballs nestled in a bed of piping hot polenta, I noticed something odd.  Although all the children in the place belonged to me, about a 1/4th of the patrons had animals on their heads.  There was a 30ish man next to me in a sock monkey hat.  A woman across the restaurant in a tiger hat.  A girl wearing a panda.  Did I miss the memo?  Is this really the latest winter fashion?  Should it be?  It’s cute on a 4yr old, but what is it exactly on a grown man?  Step out onto the city streets and look around.  Its a zoo.
