We are friends, neighbors, and obsessed with all things style. Gina designs unique, hand-crafted jewelry and Jennifer practices the art of wardrobe management. It was only natural that they came together to launch a blog and style shop. Cakewalk Style Shop.

We are here. And, we love it. Mama Shelter is located in Saint Blaise, a neighborhood on the outskirts of Paris. Actually, it’s an up-and-coming neighborhood home to eternal residents such as Edith Piaf, Oscar Wilde, and Jim Morrison. We feel that the stay here is worth the Métro trip in to the center of town.
This hotel was designed by Philippe Starck. There’s a good chance that you are familiar with his work. If not, then you probably recognize this, one of the many things for which he is famous. There is something very funky, yet nostalgic about this hotel. It’s dark, it’s artistic, and there are trinkets abound that spark our interest (think random + kitschy + cool). Definitely entertaining. At breakfast, we enjoy wonderful coffee, chocolate croissants, Al Green playing over the speakers, and vintage Looney Tunes on the big screen. At dinner, we enjoy the happening vibe, filled with lots of locals, incredible music and fabulous food.
I will come back; maybe next time with my boys. They would love the Superhero masks (and the foozball)…

I was thumbing through an old book on my shelf and stumbled upon this photograph of a strikingly lovely woman. Something about her easy, elegant style caught my attention. The scene of the photograph is very pared down and simple but I think a lot can be understood in the minutia of the details. She looks so modern. She looks so happy and relaxed. The relaxed look of privilege, I think.
Even her dog seems happy and relaxed. Tail wagging.
Upon closer inspection, you can see that her tunic and her amazing matching gray boots are all suede. The touch of dark gray silk scarf at her neck completes the outfit.
I’m in love with the look. A modern classic. Great inspiration for fall. The color story and the leggings with over the knee boots… it couldn’t be more.. well, now.
I look at the subtitle next to the picture. Pauline de Rothschild at age 53 in 1963.
I don’t watch TV. Much, anyway. Alright, a few: Mad Men, Rachel Zoe Project, Lost, Project Runway, Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style, What Not to Wear (see the pattern?), and of course, The Office. It might take me a year (and a half) to complete a season. I am very proficient at utilizing my DVR.
If I watch very little TV, how am I to see the commercials? I was so enamored with this one. Yes, it was released in April, but I’m catching it now. In September. And, it speaks to me. So, it worked. It’s very rare that I actually rewind the commercials…
Disclaimer: I do like TV; I just don’t give myself the time for it.
