We are friends, neighbors, and obsessed with all things style. Gina designs unique, hand-crafted jewelry and Jennifer practices the art of wardrobe management. It was only natural that they came together to launch a blog and style shop. Cakewalk Style Shop.
I’m a drapey kind of girl. This top fits the bill perfectly (I have it and love it). Great basic with endless options: the boyfriend jeans or shorts, for starters!

I’m having yet another garage sale today (and, again, I am convinced that March is the coldest month in Houston). I’m working so hard on getting my house completely de-cluttered so that the re-decorating project can happen. I’m getting there! We’ve hit a slow patch today and of course I break out the laptop for entertainment. My best friend’s daughter had me look up her uncle’s website, Studio 44. Larry McLaughlin is a filmmaker and film teacher at Crockett High School in Austin. Studio 44 showcases a fictional documentary of a class who sets out to make a feature film. Their goal is to get into the ‘Kerrville Film Festival’ and become famous. These webisodes are hilarious; I’m including the first one below, but you can watch eight of them here.
I went to Larry’s wedding a few years ago. I wonder if he’ll remember me when he’s famous? I’ve been a hand model and everything; wouldn’t that count for something??
Finding beauty in the most simple of things; I want to do that every day. This was perfectly exemplified when I recently volunteered my time for a cookbook shoot. Backstory: The Junior League of North Harris and South Montgomery Counties, Inc. is working on publishing another cookbook, Texas Tables. Because I am a member of this organization, I was privy to some of the behind-the-scenes activity. A few weeks ago, I was the assistant to the In-League shoot designer. I witnessed the amount of time, energy and patience that goes into creating ONE shot for a Cookbook. The photographer, Terry Vine, was spectacularly talented, as was the food stylist, Julie Hettiger, and the rest of the crew. The shot I witnessed consisted of a glass of Blueberry Pomegranate Mojito sitting on a couple of antique books on the edge of a table. Sounds boring, right? After the photographer captured this image, it was beautiful!
I had no idea all the detail work that went into a shot like this. Fake ice cubes: The stylist would carefully move the ‘ice’ in just the right place with tweezers, to capture a certain light. Again and again. Same with the blueberries, the mint and the straw. The glass would be moved 2 mm to the left, to the right. Spritzed with water or glycerin. More or less in the light. Perfection!

The food stylist and myself
The photographer asked his assistant to move his hand in for a shot and then decided he liked the look of a hand picking up the glass.

So, I began thinking to myself, ‘That is a delicate drink. What about a woman’s hand?’; ‘My nails are the same shade as the drink. Wouldn’t that be cool?’; ‘I would like my hand in that shot, c’mon, ask me. I’m standing right here!’. After some discussion between the photographer and his assistant, they agreed that a woman’s hand was needed. The photographer glanced at my hands (that were polished the perfect shade of berry for a party the previous night) and asked me to get my hand in the shot. Yes!! I’ve always wanted to be a hand model! But, sadly, no one has ever asked.
It took shot after shot. My hands began to shake. My quads were getting weak from bending my legs. I was terrified that I was going to knock over the Mojito and make a big mess. Can you imagine, after all that time and work? Thankfully, that did not happen and the photographer got a shot he liked. I had to sign a release and everything! It felt so official.

The shot on the photographer’s laptop; there’s my hand!
The crew worked from morning until evening for three shots. Lovely shots they were, and I cannot wait to see the finished product. I promise you, we will have another award-winning cookbook. Now I will just have to wait for the marvelous end result. Of course, I will let you know when and how you can order a copy, because I just know you will want one! Actually, you can pre-order a copy.

And, then, my battery went dead. No! I wanted shots of the hard-working crew. The recipe team stood on their feet all day long cooking in the kitchen and decorating the food for the shots. The design crew was lifting and sorting through countless boxes of props to make each shot just right. I apologize ladies, another lesson learned about keeping my battery charged.
I will never again view another cookbook the same.
Or, are my feathers ruffled? Either way is apropos, in this case.
Last weekend, I replaced the filing cabinets in my office nook. While emptying the files, I came across this image I carelessly ripped out of a Lucky Magazine at some point, so I’m not sure which issue. I do know that file has remained untouched for quite awhile; it’s certainly not new. That image obviously made an impact on me then, but I think I have to love it even more, now.
