We are friends, neighbors, and obsessed with all things style. Gina designs unique, hand-crafted jewelry and Jennifer practices the art of wardrobe management. It was only natural that they came together to launch a blog and style shop. Cakewalk Style Shop.
So, Jen asked me to put together a quick list of my Spring Wants.
I am perusing my favorite sites for some style inspiration and as usual, the accessories always make it to the top of my list first. I am still compiling the list, but I did want to tell you what was NOT going to be in my personal Spring wardrobe. The Harem Pant. Which, I know that WWD is trying to pass off as “Marrakech chic”. It was on soooo many Spring ’09 runways, Ralph Lauren, Armani, Jill Stuart just to name a few. But come on people…. Look at exhibit A, (MC Hammer pic ) and compare to exhibit B, Spring (runway look from Tibi).
How could this ever be a good look?
My list is in the works…

I am so super sad. Many of you already know, some of you don’t. My favorite magazine in the whole world is folding. Domino Magazine. What in the world will I do? Checking the mail will never be the same. I fear all excitement will be lost (in the checking-the-mail category). Are there any comparable alternatives? Please tell me if you know of one.
I’m crying…
(not kidding).
This photograph of a mother and her daughter on the street in Milan is absolutely beautiful. The mother is so chic in her minimalist suit and the young girl is stunning in her graphic sweater and raspberry colored skirt. Restrained elegance and youthful exuberance; both so lovely.
This picture makes me want to try harder.

I have mentioned before that I am a fan of lists. That’s how I operate. I was home in bed sick today and that is NOT how I normally operate! I am usually 100 miles a minute (that explains my clumsiness, in case you were wondering). Even in my self-pity, I was restless. But, daytime TV is not an option; that depresses me. I have not turned on the TV during the day since my two year old was an infant (Actually, I guess I am lying because I watched a ton of HGTV this weekend). The only way I could feel productive was to make lists (and a little collage; having fun with those, can’t you tell?). Because I couldn’t bear to think about attempting to grocery shop, a menu + grocery list was out of the question. Two good options: my Spring ‘Wish List’ and my re-decorating project ‘To Do’ list. How about that? I will post these little numbers on the sidebar and my progress will be publicly measured. I will solicit Gina’s Spring Wish List, as well.
The former Science Teacher in me likes data. And variables. And efficiency. I love to see how few key pieces I can get by with to make an endless supply of ensembles. So, I will try to keep my Spring Wish List as short as possible, putting much thought into the application of each piece. By the way, I will be listing a few dresses/cover-ups because I am thinking about going to Costa Rica for a couple weeks again this summer with the family and friends. I lived in the casual cover-ups last summer, so they will be a must. I will cross off each piece as they come to fruition.
Same with the decorating project. I want to handle this deliberately and with much consideration. Thank goodness I have the designer on my side. By the way, pics of the newly-de-cluttered-but-before-the-major-changes-decor coming soon. I will most likely have a weekly post related to my project.
One of the first things on my Spring Wish List will be boyfriend shorts. They will work in so many different ways; for my running around errands and summer trip to the beach. I am eyeing the longer version and will have to wear the look sans the headband and cowboy boots.

As much as I like to ‘manage my wardrobe’, sometimes I completely procrastinate and get caught in a last minute scramble to throw something together. Case in point yesterday. I had an event to attend for my friend, Helen Perry. She is a Corporate & Personal Image Consultant and we were celebrating her 25th year of being in business. The dress was ‘Valentine Chic/ Cocktail Attire’. So, not just a LBD, but I needed to throw in some Valentine Chic! I knew I wanted to start with my Lauren Merkin Fuschia Clutch. I try to find any excuse to carry it. No better excuse than Valentine Chic! The event was hosted at Elizabeth Anthony Esther Wolf, so I wanted to wear something that came from there. I had just the black top that Helen personally selected for me (see in pic below). Perfect! I thought I would probably wear my Theory skinny trousers and my Little Black Pumps. Comfortable with the thought of what I was going to wear, I went about my day. It was a beautiful day. I took the kids to the park, lollygagged around the house (my favorite thing to do), got the kids ready for the sitter and finally started the ‘getting ready’ process. With just a few minutes left before I needed to walk out the door (to get my hair blown out because I can be completely lazy), I tried on my ‘thought-out-in-my head’ outfit and panicked. No, no, no. The top is on the shorter side and the pants are on the low-waisted side. There is skin showing! Not classy! What to do, what to do? A friend stopped by in the middle of my self-imposed frenzy and I made her stay to check out all my options. None were working and we actually discussed the possibility of pinning the bottom of the top to my belt loops and me not raising my hands above my elbows all night. Not good! Then, I remembered. I had just received a package in the mail that very day. A high-waisted DVF black pencil skirt. High-waisted being the key words; much needed. Perfect! Grabbed my fuschia wrap I picked up in Italy a few years ago, kissed the kids goodbye and ran out the door, literally.
The reception was worth the scramble. It was great to see people I had not seen in ages and a nice time with the Husband. And, of course, it was special getting to celebrate with Helen.

There was also a charitable aspect to the event, in that we all brought backpacks packed with school supplies for the Bridges to Life charity. This organization was founded in 1998 by Helen’s brother, John Sage, as a restorative justice prison/victim program. The story behind the organization is amazing and we were all reminded that the families of those incarcerated are victims, as well. The thought that those children can find a reason to smile in receiving their backpacks and school supplies warms my heart (a former Science teacher’s heart, at that). A portion of the shopping proceeds will be given to the charity through-out the weekend.
I met Roseanne Rogers, Houston’s Buzz Lady and the evening’s emcee, and I will just say that she is A-dorable and super nice.
Helen and Roseanne
Helen, of course, was beautiful and just a sparkled all night long. She received a roasting and we were treated (I guess?) to her own unique rendition of “Evita”.
The Serenade
Helen and long-time friend Dallas Hill. Isn’t she smashing? She used to be a House Model for Saks and I’ve seen her model in a Fashion Show where Helen was the emcee. She’s really as cool as she is beautiful.
It was a nice little evening. However, we had to bow out of the after-party just around the corner. It was time to relieve the sitter and get ready for my dreaded 6am wake-up call. I know we missed out on some fun. I wonder if there were any more serenades. Since her dear friend and gifted pianist, Joey Boesch was present, I’m guessing there were!
