Baby, it’s cold outside

It was really cold in NYC. When I was up there for my Charmed Circle trunk show, I wore my short, military style coat over a short dress, grandpa cardigan, Wolford tights and riding boots. Cashmere scarf and leather gloves of course, because it was cold. 

Think about this people.  I was essentially out there in 20-degree weather wearing tights and boots.  But… I felt good.  Why?  Because it was a cute get-up.  I caught a glimpse of myself swinging my Zip Tote confidently over my shoulder.  That was not the reflection of a tourist.  That girl was local. 

Then came the snow.  A lot of snow.  I walked to Starbucks on my break with my scarf wrapped around my head like a babushka.  I squinted my eyes with one gloved hand in front of my face as I walked blindly down 56th in a blizzard. All weather boots, a hat and, well, even pants, would have come in handy at this point.  I arrived at the coffee shop and looked at my reflection in the glass.  Mascara under my eyes, wet hair, and cheeks red from the frost.  I looked like a cold weather rookie.  Note to self.  Next time, be prepared.

A city friend of mine said when the weather gets this cold, “it’s amazing how quickly your fashion sense goes out the window!” But, as I observed, that is not necessarily true.  There were plenty of chic, cold weather warriors out there.

I made a mental list of things I saw that are now on my list of (next) winter must haves:

A fur lined hat.  Elmer Fudd style.  I don’t care how goofy it might appear, at first.  It is all in how you wear it. 

All weather boots such as the Hunter Original, but in silver.  Saw a hipster wearing them with black riding pants and a black Moncler jacket.

Which is the 3rd must have on my list.  The black shiny puffer jacket looked ultra cool with pants in a slim silhouette. 

A leather messenger style bag.  Inclement weather calls for the practicality of an across the body style strap.  The one that I was dying over was an Hermes bag but, I think that our Linea Pelle Dylan Medium Tote worn as a messenger bag would be perfect. 

Next time, I’ll be more prepared…

London New York = Lonny (Magazine)

Were you distraught when Domino magazine folded? I was. It happened right in the midst of my decorating dilemma. However, I’ve perked up since. It seems I can get my decor fix digitally, with a click of a button. Via Facebook texts, no less! Lonny Magazine. This digital delight was launched in October by Michelle Adams, a former Domino-magazine market assistant, and Patrick Cline, a freelance photographer. The name is a cross between London and New York. While reading the magazine on-line, you still flip the pages. They provide direct links to the things you want to buy. Isn’t this brilliant?

Just in the nick of time. I have some decorating decisions to attend to…

Tonight, I was answering a friend’s email about Paris. She is taking her 15 year anniversary trip there this summer and I was listing some of my favorite things we did on our trip in September. It made me realize that I totally neglected to get anything up on the blog about that trip. It was such a fabulous trip, it is not to be neglected!

So, I will reminisce.

I told her that she must go to this Market. We spent most of one day there and it was not enough time. The husbands came with us and were more than patient (except for the one time that we spent approximately an hour at a shop browsing all the old buttons. They didn’t get it). The Vintage jewelry: a.maz.ing. Loved. Did not buy. Why? I am still shocked that I only made one purchase to bring home while in Paris. One. It was an Antique Accounting Ledger.

Really? Yes. I liked it. My husband is a CPA. He works for a French company. Shouldn’t he have an antique accounting ledger, written in French, with beautiful script that dates back to the 1890’s? I thought he should.

The shop where this ledger was found: Ghislain Antiques. We were fascinated. We got stuck. We couldn’t leave.

Ghislain is the one standing in between Gina and myself. I love his aesthetic. He stocks vintage, industrial antiques; finds from old factories and warehouses. He also designs and creates custom metal furniture, fixtures and display units. His work can be seen in Ralph Lauren in New York and Paris, Nicole Farhi in London, Bread and Butter in Berlin, and John Varvatos boutiques worldwide.

The Science teacher in me was drawn to these Scientific curiosities. Yes, those are metal eyeballs. From dolls.

We stayed until he closed up shop. Our new friend graciously offered to save us a metro ride (the ledger was heavy!) and dropped us off in the St-Germain district while giving us a mini-tour and making dinner suggestions along the way.

We’ll be back!

In thinking about the design of my future home (that I keep referring to and I don’t even know where or when that will be), I know I will be shopping Ghislain Antiques. I (we) can find his things in NYC, as well; at Center 44.

Blinging in the New Year

à bientôt. Our fave spot for all that glitters. If you’ve been, you know. If you haven’t, you must go. For those of you that don’t live in Houston, thank goodness they will have their on-line shop up soon. Don’t worry. We’ll let you know.

Tonight, I’m not venturing far. My family will be heading four houses down. Good friends, lots of laughs, a gracious cook (thanks, Mike), LOTS of kids, games, and fireworks (yes, we can shoot them in our neighborhood). Gina and her family will be ringing in the New Year in New York City. Nice.

{eclat}

If I may, I would like to direct your attention to the ladies over here at {eclat} events. They were the event planners for our Sip & Style Soiree (more images to come soon). They transformed an already super sleek salon, Damsels & Blokes, into the most beautiful, hip, happening venue. Laura and Marisol are absolutely delightful. They are brilliant. They are inspirational. They are flat out incredible at what they do. If you have an event you need to plan and you want it to be spectacular, book them. You will be happy you did.

I, for one, am looking forward to the housewarming party they will be planning for me. Now, I just need to get my house on the market, sell it, find another one, re-do it, and then we can have the party! I know it will be incredible; I’m already thinking about the dessert bar…
